Mercedes Revs Up South Africa’s EV Infrastructure with 127 New Charging Stations

Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) and Tibco’s Chargify are teaming up to bring 127 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to South Africa.

Mercedes is investing R15 million in the first phase and R25 million in the second phase to kickstart the project. The aim is to encourage more people to buy EVs and provide reliable charging for existing customers.

This move comes as South Africa leads in electric vehicle sales in Africa, experiencing a remarkable 127% growth in 2022, according to DriveElectric study.

In the first phase, 67 Mercedes-Benz EQ charging stations will pop up across South Africa by Q1 2024. The second phase will add 60 more stations strategically placed in key areas.

Chargify is busy installing AC and fast-charging DC stations at spots like airports, retail centres, restaurants, hospitals, residential areas, small towns, and major roads between cities.

Mercedes already sells various EVs in South Africa, including EQ and EQ AMG models. They’ve got EQ-branded charging stations in a few places like Silvermist Wine Estate, Highwaymans Garage, Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton, and Champagne Castle in the Drakensberg. Get ready for a more electrically charged South Africa!
