Showmax Surpasses Netflix as Africa’s Top Streaming Service

In a recent report by Omdia Research, Showmax, an online video streaming service, has seized the crown from Netflix to become Africa’s biggest streaming platform. Showmax now holds a whopping 39% of the market share, leaving Netflix trailing behind at 33.5%.

One of the reasons for Showmax’s surge is its focus on local content, attracting more viewers and subscribers. With 2.1 million subscribers, Showmax has pulled ahead of Netflix, which boasts 1.8 million subscribers.

The momentum shift might be linked to Multichoice’s announcement of Showmax 2.0, promising blockbuster entertainment and Premier League matches.

Showmax’s majority owner, Multichoice, has been investing heavily in expanding its content library through partnerships with companies like NBCUniversal and Sky.

The new Showmax 2.0, launched in February 2024, brings a fresh app, expanded content offerings, and competitive pricing.

Showmax offers a wide array of international titles from major studios like Warner Bros. Discovery, BBC, HBO, and more, making it an attractive choice for viewers.

In contrast, Netflix faces challenges with its pricing and payment methods, which rely on cards and PayPal, creating friction for potential subscribers.

With Showmax offering diverse content at competitive prices, it’s positioned to maintain its lead in Africa’s streaming market, setting the stage for an intriguing battle in the ongoing streaming wars.
