Equinix Invests $390 Million in African Data Centers

Equinix, the big American tech company, bought Nigeria’s MainOne for $320 million in 2021. Now, it’s putting even more money into Africa.

They’re planning to spend $390 million to make data centres in Africa. The person in charge of Equinix in South Africa, Sandile Dube, said they want important centres in Africa as they have in Europe.

They’re starting with Lagos and Johannesburg, and later, they hope to have one in Nairobi too.

This is good news for Africa because right now, only 1% of the world’s data centres are there. As more people in Africa use the internet, they’ll need more data centres to handle it.

Also, Activision just set up servers for Call of Duty: Mobile players in Nigeria, after doing the same for South Africa.

Many big tech companies, like Meta and Google, are investing in Africa’s internet. But we’ll have to wait and see when all this investment leads to better internet for everyone in Africa.
