South African mobility startup WhereIsMyTransport is closing its doors because it couldn’t secure more funding.
Founded in 2016 by Devin De Fries, the company has received more than $27 million in funding and employed 140 people. Devin De Fries, the founder, expressed gratitude to the investors and the dedicated team who supported the company’s mission.
WhereIsMyTransport is specialised in mapping both formal and informal public transport networks to enhance the public transport experience, with a focus on safety and accessibility. They even provided their data to governments.
In May 2022, the startup proudly announced that it had mapped 50 cities in Africa, Latin America, Southeast Europe, and Asia. Notably, the World Bank used their data to analyse access to job opportunities through public transport in 12 African cities.
WhereIsMyTransport had several notable investors, including Naspers Foundry, which contributed $3 million towards its $14.5 million Series A extension. Other investors included Cathay AfricInvest Innovation Fund, Japan’s SBI Investment, Wuri Ventures, Capria Ventures, Nedbank, Global Innovation Fund, Goodwell Investments, Google, and Toyota Tsusho.
