Amazon Prime Video Introduces Ads Beginning January 2024

Starting January 29, 2024, Amazon Prime Video will include “limited advertisements” in its TV shows and movies to support ongoing investment in content.

This change will first roll out in the US, UK, Germany, and Canada, followed by other countries later. Customers in these regions have the option to pay an extra $2.99 per month to enjoy an ad-free experience.

Amazon Prime’s current cost is $14.99 monthly or $139 annually, with Prime Video available separately for $8.99/month.

The new ad-free option would raise the Prime subscription to $17.99 and standalone Prime Video to $11.99. In African countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, Prime Video subscription costs ₦‎2,300 ($2.3), KES 560.00 ($3.58), and R79.00 ($4.29) respectively.

This move responds to the increased prices of rival streaming services, such as Netflix, Apple TV, and Hulu. To address affordability concerns, some platforms have introduced ads in their lower-priced tiers.

While Amazon Prime Video is gaining traction in African markets, it may face similar changes to adapt to local purchasing power.
