Sony’s $10M Africa Fund Takes First Leap with Investment in Gaming Startup

Sony’s $10 million fund, Sony Innovation Fund: Africa, has made its first investment after three months of its launch. 

The recipient is Carry1st, a prominent African game publisher based in Cape Town. Antonio Avitabile from Sony Ventures Corporation expressed excitement about tapping into Africa’s gaming potential. 

Carry1st, initially a game studio, expanded to licence and publish games. With Sony’s undisclosed investment, Carry1st aims to bring top-notch games to African players.

The African gaming industry, boasting over 200 million unique players, is projected to reach a market size exceeding $1 billion this year. 

Cordel Robbin-Coker, Carry1st’s CEO, sees the partnership with Sony as a driving force for the future of gaming in Africa, emphasising the untapped opportunity in the African console market. 

The collaboration aims to leverage Carry1st’s regional expertise and Sony’s gaming prowess for mutual growth.
