Bboxx Sparks Change: Relocates Headquarters to Rwanda in Bold Africa-First Move

London-based off-grid solar energy firm Bboxx is moving its headquarters to Kigali, Rwanda, showcasing its commitment to being an Africa-first company.

The company plans to invest $100 million in Rwanda, partnering with Kuwait’s EnerTech to train 500 Rwandans in the next five years. This announcement, made at the UK-Rwanda Business Forum in Kigali, coincides with Bboxx’s goal to impact tenfold, reaching 36 million people by 2028.

Founded 13 years ago, Bboxx provides unconventional electricity to over 10% of African households and serves around 3.5 million people across 11 local markets, including Nigeria and Togo. In 2022, it acquired Ghana-based PEG Africa, a major player in distributed energy in West Africa.

Describing itself as a data-driven super platform, Bboxx uses an integrated operating system to offer clean energy solutions, employing last-mile logistics and innovative financing methods.

With a focus on becoming one of the world’s largest next-gen utility firms, the move to Kigali solidifies its position in Africa.

Bboxx, known for introducing a solar energy payment subsidy in Togo in 2019, has raised over $130 million from investors like Mitsubishi Corporation, the World Bank, and others.

Its relocation to Kigali aligns with the trend of African tech players, including MPost and several startups like Chipper Cash and Flutterwave, choosing Rwanda as a base.

CEO Mansoor Hamayun stated, “This move to Kigali not only brings us closer to the communities we serve but also cements our commitment to being an Africa-first, data-driven super platform, transforming lives and unlocking potential at an unprecedented scale.”

Rwanda Development Board CEO Francis Gatare welcomed Bboxx’s decision, emphasising Rwanda’s attractiveness for smart, sustainable investments.
