Uganda’s PowerUP Sparks Excitement with Seed Funding Boost

In a bid to broaden its reach and offerings, Uganda’s PowerUP, a startup specialising in electric cooking, has wrapped up the first phase of its funding drive.

The company designs and installs smart-metered PAYGO electric stoves tailored for African households.

These innovative solutions have already revolutionised cooking in over 40,000 homes spanning Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Ghana.

Delta40, a Nairobi-based venture studio and VC fund with a focus on backing inclusive climate ventures, spearheaded the recent seed funding round. The Autodesk Foundation also joined in on the investment.

With this fresh injection of capital, PowerUP aims to ramp up its distribution channels, enhance its data infrastructure, and introduce a shared carbon program.

CEO Kato Kibuka emphasised the need for a departure from traditional cooking methods, stating, “Cooking has been done the same way for centuries… It is time to go beyond fire and use the most efficient fuel.”

The company’s electric cooking solutions promise cost savings, time efficiency, and the elimination of harmful fumes.

Looking ahead, PowerUP plans to unveil a new lineup of electric stoves later this year, catering to the diverse cooking preferences across Africa.

Additionally, it will harness data to better understand its customer base and digitise its carbon credit initiatives.
