Sim Shagaya, the CEO of the popular digital learning platform uLesson, has announced a big discount for users. He shared the news on his social media profile.
Shagaya explained that the price cut is to help families in Nigeria facing tough times due to government policies. He wants to support them now and in the future.
“These are difficult times for households. uLesson will drop educational software subscription prices by 50 per cent indefinitely to support Nigerian families through this period and beyond. I pray strength and resilience for everyone,” said Shagaya in his tweet.
Nigerian families are struggling because of government policies, like removing fuel subsidies, which made fuel prices skyrocket. This led to higher transportation costs and more expensive goods.
Insecurity in the northern part of the country, where much of the food comes from, has forced many farmers off their lands. Over 2 million people, mostly farmers, have been displaced. This has caused food prices to go up by 34.4%.
The country’s overall inflation rate is almost 30%, and it’s expected to reach 44%. Also, the Nigerian currency is losing value every day. With the minimum wage at just ₦30,000, many households are feeling the strain.
uLesson, founded in 2019 by Sim Shagaya, has been growing steadily. Within a month of its official launch in March 2020, it got 40,000 downloads. In January 2021, it raised $7.5 million in funding, adding to its total of $10.6 million.
Despite tough conditions, uLesson is still committed to making education accessible. With the 50% price cut, they’re staying true to their mission, and according to Shagaya, this offer will last indefinitely.
