In Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, the Federal High Court is waiting until May 17, 2024, to decide if Tigran Gambaryan, who heads Binance’s Financial Crime Compliance team, can be released on bail.
Gambaryan faces charges from the Economic Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), including money laundering, totaling $35.4 million. Despite pleading not guilty, he’s currently held at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
During the recent court session, both Gambaryan’s lawyer and the EFCC argued their cases. The EFCC claims Gambaryan is a flight risk, especially since his colleague Nadeem Anjarwalla escaped custody. However, Anjarwalla was recently found in Kenya and might be extradited to Nigeria.
Gambaryan’s lawyer insisted there’s no solid evidence against his client and requested bail. The EFCC countered, alleging Gambaryan tried to get a new passport despite his old one being seized. They argue he’s a flight risk and has no ties to Nigeria.
For now, Gambaryan’s fate rests on the court’s decision.
