Binance Executive’s Alleged Arrest in Kenya Denied by Wife and Kenyan Officials

Recent reports suggesting that Binance executive Nadeem Anjarwalla, who escaped custody in Nigeria, was arrested in Kenya have been denied by Kenyan officials.

A spokesperson for Anjarwalla’s wife refuted claims of his arrest and extradition, calling them false. Despite being discovered in Kenya, talks about his arrest and extradition to Nigeria are ongoing.

Anjarwalla and his colleague Tigran Gambaryan were detained in Nigeria in February 2024 but Anjarwalla fled in March. Although his passport was confiscated, he managed to leave Nigeria.

Currently in Kenya, discussions are underway regarding his extradition. However, his wife and some Kenyan officials have denied reports of his arrest.

According to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP), extradition can only occur after an arrest warrant is issued by a Kenyan magistrate court and the Attorney General receives a request. This means Anjarwalla has been located in Kenya but hasn’t been arrested or extradited yet.

Resila Onyango, a spokesperson for the National Police Service (NPS), stated that authorities are unaware of any arrest. Two anonymous officials also dismissed the arrest reports as “rumours.” Additionally, a high-ranking detective from Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) confirmed no arrests were made.

Meanwhile, Gambaryan remains in Nigeria and has pleaded not guilty to charges brought against him by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He’s currently in a correctional facility in Abuja and has applied for bail, with the court set to rule on his request on May 17, 2024.
