BritBox to End Services in South Africa by August 2024

BritBox, the streaming service from BBC Studios and ITV, will stop its service in South Africa in August 2024. The company said it’s shifting focus to more established markets with better growth potential.

BritBox launched in South Africa three years ago, offering popular British shows and films from BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5. On May 2, the company told annual subscribers they would switch to a monthly subscription costing R99.99 ($5) without needing to do anything.

In June 2023, MultiChoice Group added BritBox to its DStv Explora Ultra and DStv Streama boxes. Given that BritBox mentioned South Africa’s contribution to its 2.5 million international subscribers in May 2022, this news might surprise many users.

BritBox’s global CEO, Reemah Sakaan, highlighted in September 2022 that South Africa had high streaming volumes compared to other markets.

South Africa’s streaming market is very competitive, with services like Prime Video, Netflix, Showmax, DStv, Apple TV, Disney+, and Stream Premium. As of February 2024, Amazon Prime Video was top-rated, with a 4.55 out of five average rating on Apple and Google Play Stores in South Africa. It costs R79 ($4) per month and offers 9,509 titles, including 1,350 TV series and 8,159 films.

The South African streaming market is expected to generate $3.3 million in revenue in 2024, with a projected annual growth rate of 10.61% from 2024 to 2028, reaching $4.9 million by 2028, according to Statista.
