Zimbabwe to Install Floating Solar Panels on Africa’s Largest Man-Made Dam

To combat energy shortages, Zimbabwe plans to install solar panels on the Kariba Dam, Africa’s largest man-made dam. This project will begin early next year, marking a major step towards sustainable energy.

Energy Secretary Gloria Magombo announced at a recent Harare press briefing that the project will start with 150 megawatts of solar power on the Kariba Dam’s surface. This approach aims to use solar power on the world’s largest man-made freshwater reservoir, which lies between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Magombo mentioned that private companies have proposed adding 600 megawatts of solar power, but did not provide specifics. She stressed the government’s dedication to expanding this technology.

The initiative responds to power outages caused by lower water levels at Kariba Dam, a result of prolonged drought. The Zambezi River Authority has had to reduce water allocation, leading to frequent power cuts and pushing the government to seek alternative energy sources.

Additionally, the government plans to install more floating solar panels at Mutirikwi Dam, highlighting Zimbabwe’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on traditional hydroelectric power.
